The most common plants of the African Savanna are grasses. There are many different types of grasses found there, and they cover the Savanna in the rainy season, and in the dry season die back. The other types of plants found in the Savanna are trees. They do not grow densely, but are scattered across the plains. The trees have wide, shallow root systems, because the soil of the African Savanna is porous, so water drains quickly. The ground only has a thin layer of humus, or decomposed organic matter, at the top.
